Home Alone

Mewthos woke me about half past one this morning! Normally he allows me to sleep past four, but for some reason today he needed to make lots of noise and bounce around. As a result, I had some strange dreams, mixing my gardening with my work.

I got up about half past five, a bit late, and with the little bit extra morning activities for the doggies, that isn't a good idea. I had some trouble, in that Lady absolutely refused to go outside. When I came near her, she started shivering - I can't tell whether it's cold or fear. I talked to her and stroked her, but she stayed cowering in her basket. Luna also wasn't too happy about this strange person coming into her territory, but she, at least, went outside for a widdle. Eventually I tried picking up Lady and carrying her outside - she turned right away and ran back to her basket! I think it's because the two bigger, outside dogs have disappeared - she may fear that it's her turn, or something. Or maybe outside is scary without the two friends for company. So I left her inside.

I got to work later than I'd like, but still early. I messaged my landlady that Lady is inside today, just to let her know - she replied 'no problem'.

At lunch time, I called the nursery about Potting Soil and Compost - they are quite a bit cheaper than Builders'! Our driver drives past them every day, and he offered to pick it up for me on his way from work, then he can bring it the next day. I'll have plenty to work with over the weekend!

Blimey! My order from ePetstore just arrived! That's delivery within 24 hours! Awesome! The cat scratching toy I ordered is somewhat smaller than I expected, but the outside is pink - Mewthos will love it! They also include a small sachet of catnip - but I've got plenty of that, and I doubt my mippies will need encouragement. They love presents!

The drive home was another nightmare! Since they've built those rumble strips, driving home takes longer every evening. I think the idea was to give those coming onto the road there a chance to enter the traffic - I mean coming off the road, where I turn off in the mornings to get onto the Highway. They've now built rumble strips on both directions' lanes and added a Yield sign for the north-bound traffic (my home direction) with a solid line, rather than the 'dotted' line usual at Yield signs. However, no sign or line affects the south-bound traffic, which has to be crossed to get into the north-bound lane. And there's a Stop sign for those entering the old road - it's somewhat confusing; and the result is that the traffic is bumper-to-bumper no-more-than-20km/h all the way back almost as far as where I get onto that road. I used to be home no later than half past five, but now it's almost six!

I considered taking that road and get onto the old road where I get off in the mornings - but I don't see how it's gotten any easier or safer; mostly because so many people now use the oncoming lane and both shoulders (no yellow tarred lane available) to bypass the queue! Any oncoming traffic must just get out of the way! So, the end result is, that even for those of us patiently obeying the law, the road has just become even more dangerous.

I've decided that from now on, I'll take the Highway home. The twenty Rand toll now saves me twenty to twenty-five minutes, plus it's a lot safer - so, it's now worth the price.

At home, mippies zoom out and I go check on the doggies. Poor things! I think their buddies disappearing just a few days ago and now their owners are gone ... it's just too much, definitely for poor Lady. Luna seems okay, she's on the couch and doesn't shrink too much from me - I am a stranger to her, since she never comes visiting. Tonight she even licked my chin a little - not something I'm fond of, but I did appreciate the gesture, so I endured it. But I don't think she went for a widdle when I took her outside. I even went far away from the open door, to let her feel safe - but she just looked at me and moved a little left, a little right, and when my back was turned she shot back inside.

I tried carrying Lady outside, and as soon as I came near the open door she started shaking quite badly! I put her down and she shot right back inside, into her basket! I sat down on the floor beside her, covered her with her blanket and talked to her while scratching her head. But she seems quite traumatised, so I don't want to add to her discomfort. I also carried Luna to her basket and covered her as well. She seems quite okay with that - at least she doesn't start shaking.

Mewthos sitting behind the door, mewling pitifully, doesn't help matters, either!

I went and sat outside with my mippies, who went a-wandering - I didn't see much of any of them for quite a long time. It was already too dark to water, I did check on my Zucchini, but I'm not sure how many of them are fine. I'll check again tomorrow.

When Mewthos and Lady had done with wandering, I called my mippies inside - no problem, Ziva came running quite happily! They hadn't eaten the lamb in gravy I had given them last night - sigh - so first I had to clear, then wash their bowls. A delay which Mewthos loudly complained about! But when they had their clean bowls filled with yummies, even Mewthos finally shut up! I gave them three sachets - I got a box of fish in jelly today, so I gave them two of those. Funny thing: they're leaving the 'meat' behind, again! Ah well.

As I was washing bowls already, I also washed a few dishes for myself - just enough to see me through the week. Then I fried my Speckwurst and had two of them with lemon juice - I find that the acidity of the lemon juice counters the richness of the meat.

And then I unwrapped the scratcher under Lady Jane's highly curious eyes and placed it on the floor in the bathroom - then sat down on the mat to enjoy the show! And what a show they made of it! First each came and carefully sniffed at it. Lady Jane tried to crawl under it. Mewthos just lay back and watched what the Ladies would do. Ziva threw herself at it - like it was a lovely cushion! She tossed and rolled on it, then stuck her claws in and had a wonderful time!

It is quite strange being alone on the plot. It's very quiet, and I'm glad my landlady isn't one for going away often or for long. Their worker is here, but I have very little contact with him - yet, at least I'm not totally alone here. I love living here, but I wouldn't want a place like this to myself.

After the fun with the new toy, mippies had fun with the boxes! I had put them down next to each other and watched Mewly and Janey each disappear into one - with just their tail outside! Ziva was still rolling on the scratcher. I sprinkled some nippies over it and both Mewthos and Ziva went nuts over it! They even got into a nippy-induced fight! Now the three of them are sleeping on the sleeper couch, Janey and Ziva snuggling together, Mewthos on his own. He twirlied my jersey into the bedroom today, it was just outside the litter box.

Well, it was past eight before I got time to sit down and write this. I've taken a few kitty-cuddle and a smoke break or two, so it's ten to nine now. Time for bed.
