Day 68 of 100, Sunday 30th December

I woke at six but only got up at seven. Headache is back, just a slight pressure on the back of my head, bearable though unpleasant. Romeo’s caterwauling through the flat doesn’t help, silly boy!

I’m trying a different approach to my day, today. Maybe I’ll feel less depressed if I spend less time escaping from reality; so I’ve set up my cities for long-term production runs giving me the whole day ‘off’. Well, mostly; my main cities are still on short term runs, but I’ll stick to the basics throughout the day and do the extra tasks either in the morning or evening.

Lady Jane seems to be back to normal. She went out with everyone else when I opened the door, then came back for a nap in her chair, like she’s always done, and now she’s gone out to play! I hope.

Crap! I nearly forgot to pay the rent! Good thing I remembered in time! Last time I pay that lot! Feels good! But then again, that’s what I thought last time: that I could not possibly get a worse landlord! And yet, this lot turned out even worse! Just once I would like to meet an estate agent who is not maliciously greedy! Just once!

Temperatures are rising towards intolerable again, it’s one in the afternoon and over 30°C – now I’m glad I finished washing the dishes! There is air movement outside, so maybe I should go out and pot the Spekboom.

The air movement is not enough to counter the blazing sun! I quickly filled the smaller of the two large pots and potted all the geraniums and scraggly spekboom from the front half of the garden. I’ll leave the other half for later, when that part of the garden is in the shade.

Earlier, I took some more cuttings from Rose’s Lavender bush, since the one in the vase seems to have drooped. While I was busy there, I also pulled some grass which had grown taller than her Lavender bush!  So that just leaves three more Carnations and the rest of the Spekboom to be readied for transport. Well, actually, I also want at least one cutting from that white Pelegonia! That’s my favourite plant! And Rose also offered me the little succulent tree – I don’t know what it’s called – which Lady Jane also likes to climb! Well, Lady Jane climbs the big one, I’d like to grow one for her.

All my mippies love Spekboom, so I’d like to plant as many of those as I can! Maybe have a whole border of Spekboom, if there’s space where I’m going. That’s the one big unknown factor – I sure hope there will be space for me to plant what I’ve brought along and get a few beds going for herbs, veggies and flowers.

Lady Jane seems to be back to normal, she’s been outside, exploring, and comes inside to melt on the window sill – all as usual.

I’m not doing too well with today’s heat, though. I’ve checked the forecast and it should cool down for the next few days. I’ve sprayed my top with water, so at least that has a little cooling effect – especially when I move into the breeze!

I’m going to have to get to Makro sometime this week, my stock is nearly depleted; time to re-stock. I’ve run out of chocolate quite a while ago, I’ve just opened the last Whiskas and I’m low on sachets for the mippies. I’m also down to my last bottle of tonic water. I’m just trying to think if there’s anything else I should get from that store. Rope, maybe, to tie around the drawers – instead of taping across my furniture.

I’ll also need three more loaves of bread, as well as some more cold meats from that funny pseudo-german butchery. Although, with my luck, they’ll be closed for the holidays! I’ll see what time they deliver my keyboard set tomorrow – if they come early again, I might just go off shopping right away.  Shouldn’t go too early, though, Makro has such funny hours, I sure don’t want to be stuck outside again!

I’ve started working on Rose’s basket; sticking the waft onto the base – which is a horribly fiddly job; especially since I don’t have a big space to work on. I’ve picked all the plain sticks, leaving the pretty, colourful ones to weave with. I’m wondering whether I’ve got enough!

I went downstairs to water the garden – Mewthos came running eagerly to observe! He is such a funny one about water! Rose was just moving her car – I actually had to call Romeo; he was lying stretched on the grass in her way! Rose and I had our daily chat - boy, will I miss those! At one point Mewthos decided to go sit outside Rose’s garden – no matter how distressed I sounded, he wasn’t bothered! Ziva and Romeo were bothered, they don’t like me in distress – but Mewly? Nah – he’s a big boy! Sigh.

Later he climbed onto Rose’s car and decided her aerial makes a nice chew-toy! He was not impressed when Rose shooed him off! He gave us both such a look! Ha Ha! All six cats hung around while Rose and I chatted: Shadow came to sit on her porch, Frankie was sitting at the bottom of her stairs glaring and growling at Romeo, Lady Jane stretched herself on the gate rail Mewthos retreated to lie under a Spekboom and Ziva was cleaning herself by my feet – or near enough.

My headache stayed with me throughout the day, very mild pressure, not more than a nuisance. It’s overcast again – it has been for most of the day. Between the heat and the promising rain it’s hard to tell when it will clear!

I took a shower while the mippies were still outside, I’ve had dinner so now the rest of the evening – well if you can call an hour much of an evening – I can relax. Strangely enough, even though I didn’t physically do much today, I feel exhausted! Must be the headache and the heat.

Day 67 of 100, Saturday 29th December

This countdown is starting to get on my nerves now … I just wish it was all over and behind me! Every box I pack reduces my lifestyle – when I pack kitchen, fewer options for meals; when I pack lounge, fewer hobbies; when I pack bedroom, less clothes to choose from.

On the other hand, since I’m clearly not finished packing – the more time I have left, the better! It means that I don’t have to work myself into the ground – I can pace myself, and on days like today, when I don’t feel like packing at all, I don’t have to.

Lady Jane worries me today: she will not move away from me! She’s spent most of the day sleeping on one of the chairs behind me, occasionally mips at me for attention – but just won’t go outside to play! I’ve gone into the garden several times, each time she eagerly runs downstairs with me and explores seemingly happily … but as soon as I go upstairs, she follows! It worries me that the little fright she got yesterday, when we returned (and she found the door shut in front of her, and me with the carrier behind her) has unsettled her to such an extent! How will she cope with the trauma of several days separation?

Yet, when I went downstairs to chat to Rose, Lady Jane not only explored inside the garden, but climbed through the hedge and explored outside! Not far, and she came back fairly quickly, but still! When she came back she climbed another one of Rose’s succulent trees! Lately, she seems to have developed a passion for short, stubby trees! Ha Ha!

Romeo has been in and out all day, caterwauling through the entire flat! Ziva brought me another bird, she ate half and left the other half for me! Generous? Nah – the poor thing had just filled its crop with seeds! Ziva doesn’t eat seeds!

I’ve been making a lot of pretty, colourful paper sticks for Rose’s basket. I’ve cut the base and painted it. I’m not sure I like the colour, though – also: it’s water soluble. Maybe I’ll add a coat of acrylic paint.

Done. I’ve added a coat of golden brown – I’ll see tomorrow, in daylight, whether I like the look of it.

It’s half eight and getting dark, mippies are all out – including Lady Jane – only Romeo is mooching around wanting lovies! He breaks my heart! I’ve seriously considered taking him with me – but even if I could find the money to pay for his shots and the travel fees; I can not imagine he will cope with being shut in! He will go berserk in the kennel, en route and I can’t see any way of keeping him indoors for weeks! I’ve weighed which will hurt him more: my desertion or the trauma – and as much as I know it will hurt him when he realizes that I’ve left; I think taking him with me would drive him insane. He deserves neither …

I wait until just after eight before calling the mippies in: tricked you, Lady Jane! Ha Ha! She stays outside until five past eight – which is just in time! I just filled Romeos bowl with chicken sachet as she come strolling in!

Oh Ziva! Such a clever cat! For the past couple of days I’ve had a bowl of ice cream before going to bed and let the mippies clean the bowl – she’s caught on to that and came to complain tonight, since I haven’t had any ice cream; or rather: she hasn’t had her bowl to lick! I had to put a few drops of custard into each of their bowls to appease her! She is just such a clever girl!

Day 66 of 100, Friday 28th December

Last night I just could not get to sleep – my mind suddenly went into panic mode and I just could not calm it down. A string of ‘What if’s assaulted my poor brain and just would not quit! You’d think that having been up and about for 17 hours I’d have no trouble sleeping.

As a result I had trouble waking up, woke with a headache, to a late start trapping mippies and carting them off to the vet. Romeo didn’t help, either, insisting on his breakfast – then strolling under my feet and investigating mippies in their carriers! Lady Jane and Ziva got out of their carrier and I had to quickly shut the door before they got away; that meant that Romeo was shut inside as well! There was no time for coffee, and half-way to the vet they called to ask where I was!

Mewthos was mewling pitifully until I grabbed his head in both my hands and kissed his face – that calmed him down and he made no more trouble. Would you believe that bugger weighs 6kg! And he isn’t fat, not really – but very, very big!

Ziva was no problem, she let the vet take her temperature, took her injections and walked back into the carrier – she weighs 4.8kg.

Lady Jane was … difficult. They took her out of the carrier but weren’t ready for her, I had to try and keep her quiety by holding her in my arms, while the vet got all the paperwork and ampules ready – she wriggled in my arms, clearly not happy about this whole experience. She weighs a mere 4.6kg.

Back at home, I let the mippies out at the bottom, just by the courtyard – Lady Jane and Mewthos immediately ran to ‘safety’; but found the door shut! When I came up with the carrier, Lady Jane decided ‘no way!’ and ran off! I opened up, Mewthos and Romeo went inside, Ziva came along in her own time – but Lady Jane was nowhere to be seen! She had us quite worried! I went upstairs and fetched the ball with the bell inside – my secret weapon to calling Lady Jane! It worked! She came strolling along!

They’re somewhat unsettled, I can only tell by their need for reassurance from me throughout the day. I, on the other hand, feel utterly drained! It worries me that this ‘little’ exercise – of carrying 15kg of squirming kitties – drains me so utterly, how on earth will I cope with the whole move?!? Let alone that 2-day drive ending with the horror of Jo’burg traffic!?! Then right away the rush of getting groceries (first finding out where the shops are!) and setting up enough of my ‘home’ to keep things going while I deal with traumatized kitties – urgh, I don’t know how I will cope!

The vet had no idea what could be causing those fat lips on my mippies. She also suggested I keep them shut inside for at least two weeks! Two weeks! Ziva? And Lady Jane? Shut in for two whole weeks? They’ll drive me absolutely insane – let alone their own state of mind!

I went for a walk through the garden with Rose, we had two cherry tomatoes each and transplanted the cabbage plant, which seemed to be dying on the rockery – though it had roots, and they were moist so it’s still alive. The Snapdragons don’t seem to survive transplanting, and a lot of the carnations didn’t survive it either. I can’t say why, because some are doing well.

Lady Jane got herself into a fix, she finally summoned the courage to follow Ziva off the stair-wall onto the courtyard wall – but couldn’t get down from there! She couldn’t jump back up and the jump down was too far for her! She kept walking along mipping in confusion! She was too high for me to reach and pick her off, I bent forward offering her to jump on my back but she wouldn’t. Eventually I went into the courtyard and stacked about two or three chairs next to the wall – that finally seemed manageable to her and she jumped down!

I’ve decided to try and take all the spekboom I had planted along the path; I’ll put them into one or two of the larger flower pots with simply earth from my beds – after all, I’ve added loads of potting soil and compost to those beds over the years! I’ll just have to sift through it carefully to make sure I’m not taking any weeds along.

I’ve packed another couple of boxes with kitchen all sorts. Rose warned me there’s another heat wave next week, so I had better pack while it’s cool. It should get warm tomorrow as well, but still windy so overall I hope it won’t get too bad tomorrow – and I can do some more packing.

I’ve already packed such a lot and everything looks bare – but I’m really good at space optimisation, so ‘looking bare’ doesn’t exactly mean the same as ‘just another box or two’. It’s partly frightening just how much I’ve packed into the space here – and frustrating to get it all into boxes, now!

It’s even worse living with everything packed! The more I pack, the fewer options I have for dinner! In the end it’ll come down to just the steamer and a frying pan! Well, not exactly – I just remembered that the Induction Plate came with a set of pots, all of which goes back into its original box right at the end. But that still leaves the kettle, the flask and the water filter; cups, a plate, cutlery, the cutting board, etc. etc. Which, in turn, means that I still have to pack everything else – like the pizza board & tray, the measuring cup, the slow cooker, the juicer, the orange juicer, the blender, etc. etc.

It doesn’t end! I also still have to pack a lot from the room divider, my art stuff, the 7” singles, the record player and all the lever arch files. Then there’s still some more I can now pack in the bedroom and let’s not forget the bathroom, like the scale, the shower store hangers … and there’s the shower curtain!

And when all that is done, I need to test-pack everything that’s left – make sure I have boxes where it will fit; and when that is done there are still all those books to be packed!

Actually, since I can actually list all that still needs to be done – it means that the end is in sight! Tomorrow I’ll get the boxes for the juicer and such from the garage and start packing everything into their original boxes – except for the vacuum cleaner! That’ll have to stay out a while longer and the box is quite large.

Another heartbreaking moment: when I called in my mippies, Romeo came along at top speed with the same exuberant eagerness as Mewthos! It’s almost as if he thinks of my place as home – just not quite in the conventional sense. It’s a place to rest safe, to get lovies and attention, as well as food and nippies (catnip). I gave him his treat outside …

Day 65 of 100, Thursday 27th December

After eight the headache started dissolving – it just melted away; I guess the migraine cocktail finally took effect? I went to bed soon afterwards and slept very well – considering the oppressive heat! I had switched on the fan in the bedroom and kept that going throughout the night.

At one point I woke up to both mini’s lying right by my side, both on their backs, tummy in the air – I couldn’t resist and tickled both tummies! Not surprisingly, I woke up before five and gladly got out of bed. It was already light so I just opened the curtains.

I’m not sure what to do today, it feels like another hot day, although I do hope I’m wrong! Tomorrow, of course, the first thing I’ll be doing is catching mippies to carry to the vet for their booster shots & micro chipping.

Sigh, and now Mewthos has a fat lip! Just like Lady Jane had a while back – just the centre bit of the lower lip is swollen. Maybe if it’s still fat tomorrow, the vet can tell me wht that’s all about. It’s half eight and my lot are sitting by the door to go out, and I can see a shadow under the door, so Romeo is waiting to come in for breakfast. I give in and let them out/in.

It’s already 30°C just after eight in the morning! At least it’s overcast so the sun isn’t blazing down on everything!

I spoke too soon! Ten minutes later the clouds are breaking and the sun comes blazing through … urgh! Lady Jane is stretched out in her favourite spot on the window sill by the open window, Ziva is somewhere outside and Mewthos just came inside.

Since I’m feeling much better than I did yesterday, I get busy in the kitchen. I’ve taken the rubbish out, since they’re coming to collect tomorrow – on a Friday, instead of Tuesday, due to the Christmas holidays. I saw a few, tiny maggots again, so I thoroughly cleaned the bin again.

Mewthos is shedding so much now, in this humidity, when I pick him up he transfers a full coat onto me! When I let him go, I had a chest like a grizzly bear - okay, a grey one, but still! The look doesn’t suit me, though, Ha Ha Ha!

Oooh, lovely! The clouds are back, the wind has picked up a bit, temperatures are dropping and there’s even the odd drop of water in the air! It smells like rain, and the way Mewthos is holding his damaged paw tells me there’s definitely rain in the air! Rose confirmed it – her knees are just as reliable.

The kitchen is clean and my food is cooking – I’ve put the half broccoli and half cauliflower; the spinach with nectarines and the rice in the steamer. When it’s done, I’ll fry the mushrooms and will add the steamed veggies and rice stir-fry style.

Rose told me she was going to Spar this afternoon and asked if I need anything – she’s kind enough to bring me milk and ice cream; veggies are cooking and I still have a cucumber, tomatoes, and fruit in the fridge. I’ve also still got bread and meat in the freezer, so I should be fine till next week.

I considered finishing the vacuuming, but all my mippies are lounging around the lounge and I don’t like chasing them out! Lady Jane in particular is being very cuddly today – giving me another furry chest and arms!

My stir-fry concoction turned out delicious – and just to avoid being accused of healthy eating, I added sour cream! Yum yum!

I played a mean trick on Lady Jane: I called her from the upstairs window! Just like Mewthos she followed my voice and ran up Rose’s stairs … then started mipping in confusion! I didn’t leave her in suspense for long – I went straight down the stairs and called her again; when I looked around the corner she was on Rose’s window sill trying to find a way into the open window – she was having some trouble because the window opened away from her, so she first had to get past without falling off! Just as I went downstairs, Rose arrived back from shopping – she said it was a pleasure! Open parking, no queues – lovely!

Oh, and Rose had a look at my hair ‘cut’ and says it looks fine – I can wear it open anytime, no zig-zags or anything like that.

And now my headache is returning. It feels like a pressure inside my skull trying to press down my brain. It’s gone pretty dark outside, so I don’t think I’m being fanciful when I think the two are linked. It’s raining now, just thin streaks of drizzle – I love the smell of rain! Now if someone could just explain to me why I have to call Mewthos to come inside when it starts raining? Both Lady Jane and Ziva are inside, even Romeo has come limping up the stairs (never saw him limp before?) but Mewly? He is fascinated by water drops!

As busy as I’ve been today, I’ve made no actual progress. And in this weather, I’m certainly not going to carry the trash into the road for collection! It can stay in the bin downstairs until the next collection. I just hope it doesn’t rain tomorrow morning, when I have to carry the mippies out to take them to the vet!

Right now I have four cats in my bedroom! Romeo seems to like the acoustics in there – he’s caterwauling his heart out! He’s also developing some strange eating habits: he comes rushing in and starts eating from the first dispenser … until the bottom is visible! At that point he moves on to the other dispenser! If I come by and shake the first one, covering the ‘hole’ he goes right back to it and eats from that. Repeat until he’s had enough!

Argh! Mewly! He’s been playing outside in the rain, in the mud, then he comes in and wants a cuddle – silly me, I pick him up! Now I need a bath! Ha Ha Ha!

During a break in the weather, I carried the rubbish out – job done! That’s all the maggoty rubbish to be collected tomorrow!

It’s not even seven yet, but the mippies are mewling under my feet! So, before they bring in more mud, I treat them with their favourite munchie … and shut the door while they’re distracted! I’ve shut the windows as well, but there’s been plenty of breeze coming through all day so the room is bearable. For me, this means I can take an early shower!

The headache hasn’t change – it’s still there, but not getting any worse. If anything, it’s somewhat lighter than it was at first.

Day 64 of 100, Wednesday 26th December

I woke up late and struggled to get out of bed – it’s an oven today! Temperature rose to over 30°C – right now it’s 33°C! There is hardly any air movement, every breeze is a lovely release from the baking! By noon I had no energy left and went for a nap – only to wake up past three!

I’ve uploaded the photos I took last night and I’m glad to say they came out very nicely! When I’m up to it, I’ll edit them for uploading here. This heat has given me quite a headache which simply won’t subside. I’ve taken some paracetamol already – no change. I went to sleep with it and woke up with it.

I had something to eat, took the migraine cocktail and went to bed – no change. If anything, this headache is getting worse! I called in my mippies just before eight – Lady Jane again ignores me! When I open to see if she’s there, first Mewthos nearly topples me by running under my feet, and then Ziva goes rushing outside! Today I do NOT have any nerve or patience left! Fortunately, her Ladyship arrives punctually at five past eight. Everyone’s in so I can go back to bed and hope tomorrow I live.

Day 63 of 100, Tuesday 25th December

I couldn’t settle my mind so I didn’t sleep too well and woke up late. I feel great with my short hair now, though! Well, it’s not exactly short, just much shorter. It’s about shoulder length now.

The weather is almost pleasant, thanks to the cool breeze coming through the door. I’ve packed another couple of boxes, started the second backup of my C-drive and I found the photo paper! As it turns out, it was spread on top of my LPs and not already packed.

Using the PC is getting more and more frustrating. Not only are a few keys non-responsive, but the mouse is acting up as well, needing more pressure than normal. I’m very tempted to just get the new set and to heck with the finances! But that’s exactly how I would get into the red again – and the interest is no joke! What banks charge nowadays is criminal, in my opinion – it’s extortion!

I’ve just re-done the photo arrangement of Abby I had done for Rose and printed it on glossy photo paper – it looks much, much better! So I took the eight photos I had used and printed them as well, so she can cut them out and put them in a frame – if she’d like to. Unfortunately one seems to be a little lined; I’m not sure why.

I’m trying to go through the photos I just uploaded and I’m just about ready to take this mouse and throw it through the window! It is the absolute height of frustration! Trying to click and you never know whether it’ll click; double-click or whatever! I don’t think I’ll be able to cope with this for another couple of weeks!

Another hour later, I finally managed to upload them and add relevant captions. And I’ve reached the end of my patience, I’m afraid. I can’t cope with this mouse for much longer; definitely not for weeks! The game I play is almost exclusively mouse-action – I can’t cope with all this moving stress; overcoming myself continuously to keep doing what needs to be done AND stay calm with an erratic mouse!

Right! Delivery is due on Monday, 31st January! Ha ha ha – “I’ll still get it this year” is actually not sarcasm! I just hope they do come Monday and not Friday already.

I went for a stroll in the garden and found myself surrounded by a whole cat colony! Apart from my three, there was Frankie – who had been upstairs earlier for a single kibble munch – and Romeo as well as Felix! For myself, I got pricked and poked by a horde of mosquitoes! I have at least five red, itchy spots spread across my legs! I watered Mewthos and my flower pots as well as what’s left in the beds; picked a couple of weeds – just for old time’s sake – and came back upstairs … only to find Felix ‘trapped’ inside! Well, he was inside and wanted out – but he’s still scared of me so we had a slow waltz to each get where we wanted to be. At least his eyebrow looks much better!

I gave the mippies a chance to come in on their own, but by eight they still hadn’t chosen to come, so I called them. Ziva was here right away with Mewthos not far behind. Lady Jane decided to try her luck again, though not for long – five minutes later I saw Mew & Ziva running to the door sniffing excitedly – when I opened it, Lady Jane’s head came poking in right away! Ha Ha Ha!

I took a quick cool shower again, this time I also washed my hair – what a pleasure! So quick and none of the time-consuming hassle to rinse it afterwards! After I combed it, I found a few errant strands I hadn’t cut yesterday – they’re gone now. Sheez it feels so good, I wonder why I didn’t do this long ago!

I stayed up late again and managed to take some more photos of the moonlight on the ocean. I’ve tried so many different settings I should hope at least one of the photos should has come out well! Today it was between the trees and rather than a bright wide reflection there was a narrow long line almost orange. A ship was right across the moonlight.

I used my latest trick to claim my own chair: I have a bowl of ice cream with custard, and when I’m done, I put it on the kitchen floor for the mippies to wash! Ha Ha they love it and while they’re busy, I go sit in my chair!

I think I should take a photo of me by
