Definitely a Friday today. Mewthos mewled me awake before five - again, Ziva and Janey joined in the trampoline act. When I didn't react fast enough, I felt a mippie trying to burrow beneath my leg under the duvet! Mewthos! I started grabbing mippies for cuddles as I was waking up - they each wriggled free to bounce around the place, instead!
I left early and got to work early. Another crazy busy day - and protests are still blocking roads here and there, but most of my staff were able to get here on time this morning.
At the moment, I'm dreading the long drive and shopping after work today - I'm searching for reasons to cancel, trying to think of alternatives. Ha Ha, no luck on that, I'm afraid.
Urgh! Done!
As I started driving, it started to rain. At one point it came down by the bucket-load - fortunately it had stopped when I arrived at Little Germany. I was somewhat out of luck at the Brotstube, since their shelves were quite empty. I ended up taking three varieties of bread and they didn't have any Brezeln, so I treated myself with two three-corn-rolls, which are quite expensive. When I asked about the Brezeln, I was told she hadn't defrosted any this morning - I'm sure I misunderstood - but it did get me to thinking, if it may be possible to defrost rolls the same way I do bread? So, I'm going to try.
I had more luck at the butchery, though. I got some nice pork chops and then decided to treat myself to Buletten - which are mince patties, pre-formed and spiced. I usually make them myself - that's why it's a treat. I also took some kebabs, which are a nice mix of meat with some vegetables and simple to just fry. Quick meals for weekdays.
Today, they also had 'Speckwurst' which is a type of sausage with bacon - deeeelicious! And today, they finally had Meerrettich, a condiment, made of horseradish. Meerrettich translates to horseradish. The I treated myself to marzipan 'potato balls' - that's just the shape of the marzipan.
Next I went to the Pick 'n Pay down the road. I spent over an hour going through everything on their shelves carefully; last time I was there, I hadn't unpacked much of my kitchen yet. This time I know what I do have and what I don't, so I can buy what I'd like. At that shop, they also sell pasta dough in rolls, it looks like a Swiss Roll, except it's tightly rolled Pasta dough. You can use it for Lasagna or to cut your own shapes of pasta - but it's quite a large quantity, so it's not really ideal for me. I did, however, take some Parmesan. And Anchovies. Both are expensive, but can add just the right taste to a meal!

I took a few fruits and vegetables as well, but they don't look very nice when you get up close - they never do, no matter where you shop! But then I got lucky again: they had a special on bulk steak, going at last year's prices! So I took a bulk pack - it's not too much, it'll fit into my freezer. Well, once I've separated them into single piece packs, of course. I also got lucky with the cat litter! They had four bags - I took them all! BUT: Cor blimey has the price gone up! I'm talking over 40%! I saw it at that price online and decided 'no way, I'd rather drive and carry' but if it's that price in shops now as well? Gosh, have they added some gold dust now? Sigh - what don't I do for my mippies?
In that aisle I got chatting with a lady who also took cat litter - though the coarse one. She also had a mother with her son and daughter, like my mippies. Mother and Son have crossed the rainbow bridge at an incredible 17 and 18 years - only the daughter is still with her, also 18 years old! What an amazing age for a cat to reach! That will - hopefully, albeit sadly - be me, one day as well.
When I got outside, it had started to rain again. The drive home was quite slow, as a result - I stayed in the slow lane rather than risk the fast lane. I still got home just after five! And I shopped leisurely, without rush! Remember that fifteen minute quick rush at the Spar down the road from work? And I got home around ten to five? Yeah, I'm never doing that again!
I think I'm covered for a month - I got everything on my list and then some. I feel quite comfortable not having to shop again for a month. And by that time, I should be starting to harvest some of my home-grown veggies already!
At home it was still raining. I opened the passage door ... zoom! Zoom! Zoom! Skid! Eeek! Mippies turned around and came running back at me with a look that said "Outside Wet! Why you make it wet? Make it dry!" Poor darlings! They also get skittish with me carrying bags past them - they don't like the sound of the plastic at all. Well, I can't change the weather. I carried everything inside, unpacked and then sat outside for a bit, with three mippies crouched around my feet looking at the wet in disgust! At one point, Ziva ran and crouched under the car, Mewthos followed, but couldn't figure out how to get over the 'moat' formed by the rain dripping off the car port roof, so he came running back in disgust. Everybody is inside, early, and not very happy about it. I gave them a new sachet I saw today - they licked the gravy, but don't like the meat. Ha Ha!
They also didn't appreciate my dinner, since I made myself a roll with Matjes Salad - which is made with cuts of Matjes Herring (a type of fish) with apple slices all in a home-made mayonnaise. They'd love the fish, I'm sure, but not the mayo! So they didn't get anything. Like I said, they were not impressed.
I did give them a Whiskas Sachet as well - but since they didn't eat all the meat, only the one. Now they're mewling and mipping for attention - this is typed with many, many mippie-cuddle-interruptions.
Tomorrow I'll have to re-pack and freeze all the meat I got today. I got a lot of variety, but not too much in quantity - I don't think I'll have a problem finding space in the freezer. I shouldn't think any drawers are at risk of getting stuck again.
Well, it's going on eight and I'm really tired, ready to sleep. It's been an exhausting day - mentally at work, as I'm being rushed to get certain things done; and the shopping was physically exhausting, especially driving in the rain.
