Day 54 of 100, Sunday 16th December

I woke around seven and got up to find maggots in the kitchen! Disgusting! That happened only once before in my life; in a kitchen where the drain had leaked onto the floor. Well, I’ll have to give that kitchen a complete and thorough clean today! I just hope they came from the waste bin. I’m afraid it might be the tin of salmon my mippies mostly left behind – I thought I was giving them a treat, but they didn’t eat much of it; so the next day I ended up throwing most of it away. I know I’ve let the cleaning go somewhat, but surely not as bad as that!

Phew, I think the waste was the source. I’ve taken it out and sprayed some insect killer in the bag before tying it. There are still a few stray maggots here and there, I’m clearing them as I see them. I flush them down the drain with some bleach and hot water. I’ve cleaned the waste bin inside and out, the floors are next. And while I’m at it, I’m also vacuuming the rest of the place. It’s still overcast today, though quite hot, so I figure it best to do the physical work while there’s still a cool breeze.

The vacuuming is somewhat troublesome, since the cat hair keeps blocking the pipe. Fortunately I figured out that I can simply connect the pipe to the other outlet which blows, instead of sucking, and the whole ball comes out – for me to collect and bin. It’s tedious, but at least it’s a solution which does not involved repairs.

Yikes! Just vacuuming the little passage took longer than the entire bedroom! Well, it’s my own fault for leaving it off for so long, I had to stop every few minutes to blow out long sausages of cat hair from the pipe! I had to brush the carpet quite vigorously to get the hair off the carpet – and then it collected in long sausages in the vacuum pipe! The lounge will be an absolute nightmare, after all, that’s where they spend most of their time indoors!

I’ve washed the kitchen floors, and I think I’ve done enough for one day. I’ve put everything back in the bedroom as well as the kitchen, I should really wash the dishes today as well, but I’m not quite up to it. I’m just glad it was an overcast, cool day today and not a hot one. Let’s hope for a repeat of today’s weather tomorrow.

The lounge is going to be quite a mission, what with all the cat hair and all the boxes strewn about everywhere – that’ll take a whole day on its own! I better get back into the habit of vacuuming regularly.

While I was at it, I also changed the bed sheets – might as well go all the way. I’ve gone and made my dinner early – just fried a sirloin followed by ice cream and custard. At least I won’t have to water the garden today, as it’s been drizzling somewhat this afternoon – I only know because Ziva came in wet and wanted cuddles.

Romeo is driving me quite mad, he’s been around and underfoot most of today – except while I was vacuuming. Only Mewthos sat to watch me vacuum. He also came to supervise when I was changing the bed sheets. The rest of the day Romeo has been in and out, caterwauling for affection. I just sat with him for a while – he comes so eagerly, throwing himself at my hand. I so wish I didn’t have to leave him behind, that there was something I could do for him. He’s not very endearing in his habits and his attitude – until you know the full story; which even I don’t.

I followed an early dinner with an early bath, only Lady Jane came to investigate. When I got out the whole town was covered in fog, off the sea, quite salty. Felix came for dinner, so I filled the Whiskas bowl for the third or fourth time today! I called the mippies in about half eight and they all came happily! Even Lady Jane came without any hassle. I do hope in our new home I’ll be able to let them come and go as they please – I don’t like having to shut all windows, especially in summer. Last year was hard enough.
