Monday and Tuesday were complete write-offs! As I woke
up on Monday, my head was one mass of migraine-riddled agony. A concerned
colleague called to ask if I was ok – I just croaked ‘migraine’ ... I didn’t
even manage to eat a bite so I could take medication – just slept and slept and
slept. Tuesday I was able to get up, eat a few bites now and then – and drink
water. Lots and lots of water! Wednesday morning I was still a bit shaky, but
well enough to go back to work.
When I got home, my neighbour was able to visit our
kittens for the first time since Sunday – and we both played with them and
fussed over our respective mommies for quite some time.
And then I had a load of chores to catch up on.
Fortunately I had carried the garbage to the gate – and our gardener kindly
took them out for collection, even though he was not working for me on Monday!
He is very helpful that way. I had the laundry still to do, and the litter box
was three days overdue as well. Having cleaned it, I puzzled over the
persistent smell of cat pee in the bathroom, even after having washed the
floor. Turns out the mommies – in justified disgust over the state of their
litter box – had pulled my bath mat INTO the bath, used that as a litter box,
and scunched it up in lieeu of covering! It was nine before everything urgent
was done, my lunch packed and dinner on the table!
This morning I finally feel 100% back to normal. Both mommies want out for a turn, so I let them out while I have my coffee. Ready to leave, I call – and only Silver returns! I call my neighbour, since Shadow acknowledges her voice – she’ll ignore me. She came out and called, and called and walked all the way to the road calling – but no Shadow! So we decide she’ll just have to stay locked out today, nothing else we can do! I go inside to say goodbye to Silver – and there sits Shadow, all wide-eyed innocence ‘Oh? Were you looking for me?’ She must have run up behind my back, little minx!
At work, I’ve started reading the Tarzan novels by
Edgar Rice Burroughs during lunch times – I find them incredibly enthralling. Funny
how, from earliest childhood on, I had always loved all things Africa – the
Tarzan movies, Daktari, anything to do with Africa. I wouldn’t want to live anywhere
else – crime rate notwithstanding.
Considering how much I loved the Tarzan movies with
Johnny Weissmuller throughout my childhood, I find it incredible that I’ve
never read the books before! How could I have missed them? Were they really in
none of the libraries I frequented throughout my childhood? Ah, well – better
late than never. I’m loving them.
Back at home I’m told that my cats had some excitement
today! A crow apparently flew straight at one of the mommies sitting on my
window sill! The lady next door to my neighbour happened to witness the entire
incident – and told us that her dogs had been attacked by crows as well. The
cat (my guess would be Silver) jumped off the sill in fright and the crow left.
Upstairs Silver was waiting for me by the door and seemed to be telling me her
side of the incident – she kept trilling and chattering incessantly, quite
unusual!
I’d spotted some new flowers so I went down with my
camera to meet my neighbour for a thorough inspection – both cats followed me down
and were cavorting like kittens around us while we photographed the flowers.
There are so many new flowers – well, mostly same flowers in new colours – in full
bloom, it is such a joyous sight! The Nasturtiums seem to be coming to a yellow
… well, break, not end. I should tend to them when I get a chance. I’ll post
photos tomorrow – no time tonight to select, crop and optimize.
Upstairs we had a lot of fun with the kittens – I picked
them up, blanket and all, in a bundle and put them on the bed. The calico seems
fascinated with denim – she confidently strides towards the blue and climbs
without fail. The tabby is the most photogenic – the twins strike a cute pose
only to move the instant the photo is taken. I’m not counting just how many
blurs I took!
Silver seems somewhat unsettled today, could be her
disgust at not finding any dry ground (courtesy of a daylong on-off drizzle) or
her experience with the crow in the morning. Either way, she kept walking
around, away, out and back the entire time. I think it upset her to realise
that, what she heretofore thought of only as flying lunch, could be dangerous
to her! Well, for my part, I’ve half-closed the window, so at least no crow can
fly into my bedroom!
As I write this, Silver is out for another turn and
the neighbours tom strides in, straight towards my bedroom! Since he fights
with Silver, and Shadow fights with him, I’m a bit wary for the sake of the
kittens – I get up to follow him, when he reappears; stares me down
nonchalantly then walks back out, sniffs around, sprays his ‘scent’ and stalks
off!
It’s getting cold and Silver won’t come when I call,
so I’m pulling a sure trick: go into the kitchen and open the fridge! Turn
around – ta da! Silver! That cat is obsessed with food!
I also have a suspicion that some of her bones were
broken at some stage and didn’t grow back aligned. Her ribcage feels somewhat
abnormal, and I think there’s some lump in her stomach area. My neighbour
agrees it feels unusual, so when she goes to get spayed, I’d like to have her
checked out first. She’s not in pain, she neither winces nor shows any sign of
discomfort. Also, her left pupil seems somewhat abnormal. I don’t believe she
was mistreated, or she wouldn’t have walked into my life so confidently to set
up home with me. I’m hoping a vet can give me some more information.
Ah well, time for bath and bed. Photo’s tomorrow!
