Interesting observation: When I opened the door last
night, both cats were sitting by the door waiting to get out – Shadow ran
downstairs immediately ... and Silver stayed behind! Only when Shadow was on
her way back did Silver move outside for her turn. It seems that the willful
demanding minx has met her master!
When my neighbour left yesterday, Shadow went with her
– even shot past her to get into her flat! There was an awkward moment when she
came face to face with her tom! It took some coaxing to bring Shadow back to my
flat – though once upstairs she ran straight to the kittens!
Tonight Shadow needs to go to the vet to have her
stitches removed. We’ll also hear what the vet says about Shadow nursing the
kittens – since her nipples look rather sore! Whenever I’m around, I push the
tabby to his mother. He seems to have developed a preference for Shadow – and
he’s a very aggressive eater. He’s the biggest of the lot – he’s also the first born. Strangely enough, the
smallest kitten – the calico – was the second born.
They’re exactly two weeks old today – maybe I should
weigh them again tonight. They should weigh over 250gr; which most of them had
already reached at one week. Well, the weight itself isn’t the important
indicator – it’s the weight gain! They all look well enough and they’re all
nursing regularly and getting cleaned; but better safe than sorry. It’s quite
entertaining, too! Since they just won’t hold still – squirming and wriggling
and padding about. I have a suspicion the mommies lure them – rather than carry
them – to the night stand when I’m not looking.
This morning I had an interesting incident. Silver
kept coming into the lounge, where I was having my coffee. I thought she might
like to go for a turn outside, but she just looked through the open door, then
went back to the bedroom – only to pop in again a few minutes later! So I
followed her – and she contentedly plopped herself down on top of Shadow and
the nursing kittens for some attention! Maybe I should start spending more time
in the bedroom. Neither mommy likes to be ignored for too long – sheez, what’s
going to happen when the kittens start wanting attention as well? I’m living in
Interesting Times!
At work I did what needed doing and at lunch time I
selected & edited the kitten photos I took last night. In one photo the
tabby is holding his paw to his nose – which could easily be interpreted as
giving me the finger, too! I can just see this being swiped and used for
meme’s!
\My neighbour and I were just talking last night about
what a blessing digital photography is to us amateurs! Neither one of us could
have afforded to take the number of photos it takes for one good print! I told
her about my visit to the UK – where I took 36 photos on a 24 film! What a
waste – I had been to Tower Bridge, Madame Tussauds, 221b Baker Street, Westminster, Picadilly –
even Edinburgh! And not one single photo to show for it! But then again, to me
photos are a mere aid to memory. Like that time the EL site manager denied ever
seeing me with pink hair – and I could show him photos!
Speaking of hair – remember how almost nobody noticed
that I had cut my hair? One of the guys cut his – and it was the hot topic of
the day! Everybody talked about it – which amused me no end!
Back at home Shadow shot out the front door as it
opened – into my neighbours garden to attend to the Frangipani (her favourite
toilet!). From there my neighbour picked her up and put her straight into her
travel basket and took her to the vet. He took out the stitches but didn’t say
anything else. She seemed a bit disoriented when she came back – my neighbour
placed her on the pole between our two properties, and she stayed there, as if
she wasn’t sure what she was doing there. I picked her off and placed her on
the steps. She only started moving up the stairs when I came up. When I tried
teasing her by shoeing her inside she appeared frightened – she turned to
escape downstairs! So I picked her up and brought her in – once indoors she ran
straight to the nightstand and sat on the bottom shelf! So I picked her up and
plonked her on the bed with Silver and the kittens. Strange, since she got no
medication? Ah well, she’s happy now!
It was nearly seven when we finally tore ourselves
away from the cats and kittens! Too late to do anything but the bare essentials
– like dinner, bath, etc! I’ve decided against a cold potato salad – it’s still
too cold in the evenings; so I’m steaming Brussel Sprouts (my favourite!) and
frying the potatoes. Though I’ll add a salad sauce (mustard, mayo & apple
cider vinegar) as well as freshly picked chives. I’ll take some to work as
well. Silver came to the kitchen to come fetch me for some more attention – ha ha,
I’m well-trained, eh?
The kittens are beginning to explore the use of their
tongues – it is so cute when they start licking their paws! Oh, and while
Shadow was at the vet, I weighed the kittens – they’re all putting on weight
nicely! Tabby weighs in a hefty 350gr followed by Patches with 325gr. The twins
weigh 305 gr (short sleeve) and 295 gr; so the calico is no longer the
light-weight! The lightest last week was 230gr, so they are indeed all gaining
nicely.
Now if only I could dump some of mine on them! Ah
well, life is good!
