Wednesday - Friday

So dull, that there really wasn't anything to post.

At work, I'm busy re-arranging the store - placing all the fast-moving stuff nearby and the slow- or non-moving farther away. Most people these day seem to pay a gym to exercise, weight-lifting and such - I, on the other hand, get paid to gym! I'm moving everything by myself - I only asked for help with the 37 kg bars of raw material. The worst are the bins with what they call bodies - blocks of brass! They weigh some 15-20 kg as well and I have a crap load of those to move around! So, I'm getting quite the work out! And, as I said, I am getting paid rather than paying for the 'privilege'! Ha Ha!

I just stepped onto the scale here at work - it's recently calibrated, so ... I'm down to 80 kg again! Nice! In PE I struggled to avoid going over 90, I went as high as 95 at one point - and really struggled. By the way, when I say 'struggle with weight' I definitely am NOT talking diet or gym! That is just totally NOT me! I always joke that my mum once put me on a diet - it was the longest 10 minutes of my life! That about sums it up with me and dieting. And the only time I ever went to 'gym' was after a car accident, as part of the physio therapy.

Funny thing, the best way for me to loose weight has always been my mother's cooking! Ha Ha! No, she wasn't a bad cook, nor did she go in for healthy, nutritious meals - it's just that, for some reason, her cooking didn't quite do it for me. Oh, I enjoyed the food - but whenever I lived at home, I was always underweight. Throughout my entire childhood, and when I moved back home in 2004, I dropped from close to 100 kg (if not over) to a little over 60 kg! I looked awful, though! Anorexic describes it best. Skin and bones, not healthy. I wonder whether my mum ever made the connection? It affected only me - nobody else eating her cooking was ever underweight. Just me. Ha Ha - the weirdo, right?

Anyway, when I talk about 'struggling' with weight, I'm talking about gradually changing my life style. For example: I used to drink my coffee with three teaspoons of sugar. Then I reduced it to 2, then 1, then I changed over to sweeteners - and they were too expensive, so now I drink my coffee with just milk. Except when I'm visiting or at a restaurant! Ha ha, for some reason, then I take 2 sugar! Weird, I know - but that's me!

And, instead of 'exercising' I prefer to work. I mean, washing the floors and such takes quite a lot of energy. And then, of course, there's the garden! Lots of fresh air exercise to be had! And I love it!

Another thing I work on is my chocolate addiction, he he he. Now, of course, since I'm ordering the good stuff online, it's no longer an issue. Oh, sure, it's not exactly healthy - but it's so yummy, that I'm quite happy with a single cup; where I used to polish a 100 gram bar in the past!

The biggest difference though, since I've left PE is my work. A lot of my work here involves manual labour, so I get a lot of exercise at work. At the same time, it's not such a lot, that it's beyond my capacity - after all, I AM over 50! I'm not at risk of a heart attack or such, from my work - grin, definitely not! And if I'm not up to something, I can always ask for help, so it's not like I've joined a chain gang!

Oh, on Wednesday morning I found the Amaryllis dug out and neatly placed beside the hole! Huh? That reminded me of a story my colleague told me, when he spent the afternoon planting flowers all along the driveway - while his dog, unbeknownst to him, picked each on carefully up, pulled it out and placed it next to the hole ... all in a row! He was NOT happy that day! His wife had a good laugh, though!

Anyway, I plonked it back into its hole and it's stayed there ever since.

My garden is doing really well. Melons are popping out en masse, the Zucchini are growing big and strong, ditto the cucumbers, butternut and even the eggplants are coming along nicely! The carrots are a row of green tufts, and even the parsley I had sown behind the cucumber are poking out little specks of green!

The bush beans are doing extremely well, some of the peas are coming up, and a second broad bean is growing. On the flower seed side, things are not so green, I'm afraid. Something is coming up in one of the spots where I've sown seeds - but nothing anywhere else, at least, not that I can see.

The mustard seeds have gushed up and out practically overnight and the parsley next to them are also teeny tiny specks of green. I've had a word with Tynx about curling up on top of my little plants - I think she understands.

And then, last night, in a moment of madness, I picked up my new fork and started turning the ground next to the Cosmos! Where I want to sow more flowers and place bulbs! I don't know what possessed me, but I managed to clear about a third of the bed last night alone! It wasn't really much work - the ground isn't rock hard, because my landlord had loosened it with the pick ax that time. Even though it's been quite a few months, the ground is still loose - plus, of course, it gets watered regularly, which helps.

Anyway, I think I'll be able to clear that bed without any trouble this weekend. I've also been thinking - seeing how quick & easy it was - that I should maybe also clear the ground between the row of spekboom I planted? I'll mix in compost and then I can place bulbs there as well!

Today we finally got our eyes tested! Now I just need to book us an appointment so that we can get our drivers licenses! Only ... there are no available slots! Sigh. I see they are updating the site every Monday (our municipality, that is - some others update daily), so I'll check again on Monday and hopefully there will be two open slots. My landlady told me that she heard you can't select WHERE you go, that they assign the location ... and we could end up having to go as far as Randburg! Fortunately, she was wrong. You select your location - but you can only make a booking, if that location has an open slot. If it doesn't have an open slot, you can either select another location with an opening - or, as I'm doing now, wait for an open slot. Actually, right now ALL locations have zero openings, so I don't exactly have a choice. I've just downloaded the form we need to fill in ... then ALL we still need, is ID photos - which you can usually get right outside!

When I got home, I was told that the power would probably go out at nine tonight - load shedding. Sigh. That set my rear on fire - in the sense that I jumped through hoops to get everything done that needed electricity! I did the laundry - it's still in the machine, though. I can hang it up tomorrow morning. I prepared the dough for my rolls - which I've baked and they look lovely! I gave the 'french bread' recipe a try this time. Good choice, apparently! And then I washed the dishes, so that I could make myself a smoothie!

I bought another small flask today - not a replacement for the old one, where I keep the hot water, but a 2-cup sized one. With a vacuum seal - although I didn't know that, when I got it. Sigh, that seal is a bit of an issue, as I shouldn't allow anything but water through that seal as it will be almost impossible to clean! For tonight, I've filled it with a smoothie - so I have 3 cups!

I decided not to prepare the fruit I got today for freezing. I got some bananas and they had strawberries at a reasonable price. But if I put them in the freezer now, they start freezing, then stop, then start again? It didn't go well for the bananas last time, so I'd rather not take the chance.

I had watered the garden thoroughly, before washing the dishes, as the sprinklers were on. That means using water pumped directly from the borehole - saving electricity.

Mewthos has some kind of scab on the top of his head. It's really large, so I now call him Unicorn! It's not really THAT big, but it feels like half a horn!

When I was watering, I saw that my Nasturtiums are now almost black with ant eggs! They plastered eggs under every single leaf and alongside the stems, just everywhere - so I pulled them all out! I want to look up some natural way to keep those pests out of my veggie patch - when I pulled out the Nasturtiums, I could see their roots were almost completely eaten away! And some of my Zucchini are starting to look droopy, too ...

And then, for some weird reason, instead of taking a well deserved rest, I picked up the garden fork and turned over all the beds I want to clear! I finished the bed from the Cosmos to the corner, then between the Spekboom all the way to the parking and then, just for good measure, I also turned over the ground in front of my veggie beds, which is showing lots and lots of specks of green, where weeds are coming through again!

Again, instead of finally taking a break and resting, I cleared all the weeds and such out of the bed next to the Cosmos! So, tomorrow, all I need to do is mix in compost and then I can start planting bulbs and sowing seeds!

Cor blimey, I did more work this afternoon than I normally get done in a whole weekend! On the positive side, I now have the entire weekend free to do just whatever I feel like! With no 'chore' hanging over me - well, perhaps the floors and maybe the bathroom? Neither are 'must' though.

I think, for now, I'll publish ... in case the power goes out. And then I should start the cheese making! I still have some from the last batch - not much, just some.
