Lock-down Day 224

And the power is out at home ... again! Early morning thunderstorm. Fortunately this house has a tiled roof, not the corrugated whatever-metal that was, so the rain doesn't sound like a staccato drum inside, scaring my mippies out of their wits! Remember how Ziva always used to hide under the sleeper couch in the lounge, whenever it rained? Well, she still doesn't like the sound - but she's no longer scared out of her wits.

The thunder was very close, though - and quite loud. It also rained quite hard early on, but let up fairly soon. I saw a few mm in the measuring cup, but didn't go out to see exactly. I was more concerned with the gate. I contemplated switching it to manual - but that would leave it open all day long, for anyone to walk in. On the other hand, if the power isn't back by the time I get home, I can't get in at all! Someone will have to climb over the wall to switch it to manual ... and there is no way I can do that! In the end, I left it on automatic. It's a week day, business will be calling in to get the power back up and running - even though they all have generators - so it should be back on by the time I get home.

On the way to work, I saw the power was out almost all the way into Rosslyn! All Onderstepoort was dark as well, and the street lights along Rosslyn road are out as well. Hmm ... I wonder ...

But I really must make a plan to get myself a little gas cooker! This 'no coffee' and 'no dinner' effect are very unpleasant! At least the power is on at work, but still. Also, temperatures are much lower than the first time, when we had that day-and-a-half power outage, so there's less chance of anything defrosting.

After lunch I called the manager to ask whether our power is back on - he said no. Sigh. I'll stop at their office on my way home, then. They're closed by that time, but one of the guys is always on site, so I can find out if the power is back, and if not, I'll ask one of them to come with me, climb over the fence and open the gate. Or maybe I should go home first, and if the gate isn't working, go fetch him? Yeah, sounds a better plan - more optimistic, ha ha!

I really hope power is back on, because I'm hungry! Crap, I can't take that chance, actually ... I'll have to call again and find out. If it's still off, I'll need to get something to eat ...

Phew! Power is back on! All is back to the Industrial Age, the Dark Age is - albeit temporarily - over! I really must get myself a gas cooker soon! Just one or two plates, so I can boil water or fry a steak! When they call Africa the dark continent, they aren't kidding around, are they?

I had a bit of an issue with Mini late last night, when she pounced on my arm - and a claw went into mu under arm! Very painful, even though it turned out to be just a minute prick ... why would she do that? Aha! She's brought a live toy to bed! Sigh ...

Back at home, we've had 10.5 mm rain! Nice! Mippies again don't go out until I come with them - so I'm not letting them wait. I finish the last of the palmy things, then trimmed all the dead stems off the rose bushes - I really have no clue what I'm doing with the roses! And then looked around for my next project. Should I start weeding the flower beds? They sure could use it! In the end I decided to start working from the house outward.

Today, I cleared some of the grass and weeds under the car port, working towards the driveway. I'm going to have to use the hosepipe to find out just how much of the ground is paved - so much grass has grown over paving, and it's brought its own soil. It's a lot like that path in the garden in PE: parts are so completely overgrown, I can't tell whether it's garden or paving! I've made a good start tonight ...

I've also been thinking that it might be a good idea to have a flower bed along the patio - although I won't be able to see any of the flowers from the patio or inside, but it will put some space between wall and lawn. I'm thinking of planting succulents there. Maybe the cabbage plant - which really should go back into the ground as soon as possible. And the desert roses would really look nice there - and I now have such a lot of those! Even though I left a lot behind!

Let me first make the bed, then I can decide which plants I'll place there.

Ziva calls me to proudly show me she's found a way on to the roof! She's gone for a stroll across it, front to back, then back to front!

Back inside, I first have a leisurely smoke while I decide what I'd like to do first. Well, I say first, but the very first thing I do is treat mippies, of course! I think the litter boxes first. Then dinner. Now I'll just finish typing this, then watch the rest of the episode I started during dinner before I settle down to continue reading my book ...
